Turbo Kits.com & CREW take on the 2005 CannonBall One Lap of America
UPDATE: May 9th 2005 - We Have Returned ---------------------------------------------------
We are back and the race was a success. We were able to run our CRX Turbo w/ 100K miles & bone stock internals on 3000+ miles of US highway and 9 of the east coasts best race tracks without engine failure. This excercise was to help us answer & prove the 4 most frequently asked questions:
- Can a stock engine handle a turbo kit without blowing up? We made it through the whole race at 10 PSI on the stock block with 1 oil change at the start.
- Can you run a turbo engine hard? Yes 100% for sure! Just see our pics & vids of us on the race tracks.
- Can you do long highway drives with a turbo? Yes, we had a 770 mile non stop leg in the race.
- Will a turbo ruin my gas mileage? Our 240 WHP B16 got 25 - 29 MPG on the highway during the event.
This race proved the reliability and durability of Turbo Power. If you take Corky Bell's equation from his book Maximum Boost which says "every mile racing equals 1000 miles of normal driving" then we easily put over 50,000 miles of wear and tear on our Project CRX before the race was over. All on the stock block, head gasket, pistons, etc... NO Internal Mods were done to this engine. That being said... What a fun trip!
We started in South Bend Indiana @ Tire Rack for a Wet Skidpad Event, drove 3200 miles up and down the east coast from New Hampshire to Georgia and ended back at Tire Rack for a Dry Skidpad event.
This is how the event schedule looked. Don't forget to check out the pics and vids.

Now that we have proven that a stock engine can handle a turbo. It is time to go back to the drawing board and build a car fully capable of winning it's class. Maybe a Type R??? We'll let you know as soon as the car is ready.
Again, we would like to thank everyone for their support :)

UPDATE: April 27th 2005 ---------------------------------------------------

Starting April 28th Turbo Kits.com & CREW will be heading out to South Bend, IN to start this years One Lap of America endurance race (This Years Route). We will be running in our 91 CRX w/ B16A Swap and FMAX / Turbonetics Turbo Kit (pictured above).
The race is a 3000+ mile endurance race along the eastern half of the US. Including time trials at 10 of the hottest race tracks in the US like: Indy, Summit Point, BeaveRun, Lancaster, New Hampshire Speedway, Mason Dixon Dragway, VIR, Roebling Road & More... We will easily see speeds of 120 MPH on the tracks and be racing along side of many cars (see Entrants).
The CRX that Turbo Kits.com is running has a stock B16A JDM engine with about 80K miles on it. We are running the FMAX Turbonetics kit. The engine has completely stock internals and is stock except for Injectors, FPR, Fuel Rail, VAFC, Skunk Intake and Full 3" exhaust. We are hoping to show that a turbo can be added to a stock car while keeping reliability & gas mileage on long trips and still being able to drive hard on the race track :)
We would like to thank everyone for their patience and support...
