Your MS3 is now breathing easier and putting down somewhere in the neighborhood of 309 whp and 326 ft-lbs of torque. However, your car feels fast as hell sometimes, and not so fast others, especially if you have been driving it hard for awhile. The likely cause? Heat soak of your poor little Top Mount Intercooler. As discuss in the turbocharger lesson earlier, pressuring air also heats it up. It is the job of the intercooler to pull that heat out of the intake charge and increase the charge density into the engine. As the stock TMIC (or any IC) becomes hotter, it’s ability to cool the intake charge decreases, and the intake charge temperature continues to rise. The small size of the stock TMIC (12.75” x 11.75” x 2”), small amount of thermal mass (8.5 lbs), and it’s location in the engine bay on top of the engine all contribute to it heat soaking quickly when driving in boost. On paper, the solution is simple: replace the stock TMIC with a bigger IC Core with a larger amount of surface area exposed to ambient airflow, a larger volume core to reduce the pressure drop across the core, and a larger thermal mass to delay the onset of heat soak. Preferably, locate it outside the engine bay. It’s a little harder in reality to make that happen within the confines of the car design. However, our Front Mount Intercooler does all those things. With a huge bar and plate core measuring 31.5 in x 7.75 in x 3.25 in giving 244 in2 of surface area exposed to airflow vs. 150 in2, 793 in3 of core volume vs. 300 in3, and 18lbs of thermal mass vs. 8.5 lbs, your intake charge will be consistently cooler under all conditions. Accordingly, your performance will be consistently better than the stock or any aftermarket TMIC.
Surprisingly, this is a very easy install. No major cutting is required and it is easily reversible. More power. More consistent power. Relatively easy install and relatively easy to uninstall.
At this point your MS3 will be making somewhere in the neighborhood of 315-320 whp and 345 ft-lbs of torque. You will have more power throughout the entire rev range. You are regularly embarrassing unsuspecting WRX, STi, and EVO owners. Plus your MS3 now looks like the badass that it is with TurboXS MS3-FMIC core filling the gaping hole in the front bumper.
